Russia asked the Hague Tribunal to classify as secret the hearings on Sergei Pugachev’s claim

Currently, the Hague International Tribunal is considering a claim filed by Sergei Pugachev against  the Russian Federation on compensation of at least $ 12 billion for the assets expropriated from him.

The Russian Federation requested the Tribunal to classify the proceedings as secret in order to prevent information from leaking to the media, despite the fact that the Arbitration Rules of the United Nations Commission for UNCITRAL, applied to these proceedings, does not provide for such restrictions.

Sergei Pugachev is confident that openness and transparency are fundamental requirements for any trial with the aim of achieving the truth.

The Tribunal, in response to the appeal of the Russian Federation, agreed to a partial restriction of disclosing information to the media.

Despite disagreement with the position of the Russian Federation, we have to, at the request of the legal team of White & Case, led by David Goldberg (in accordance with the Resolution of the Government of the Russian Federation, represents Russia’s interests in this proceedings), remove information about the date, venue, time and content of the hearings from Sergei Pugachev’s website.

We apologize for any inconvenience.
